Off grid solar applications in Manipur

Manipur’s Renewable Energy Development Authority MANIREDA has taken a number of initiatives and targets to promote solar energy in the state.

  1. It recently announced plans to power Manipur’s hospitals and deputy commissioners’ offices through Solar energy or wind-solar hybrid systems by mid-2012. The solar energy systems that MANIREDA wants to scale up have been installed and demonstrated at Moreh hospital in Chandel district.The plan includes five district hospitals in the hills to be covered by next year and nine offices of deputy commissioners to be powered by solar energy by June 2012.
  2. MANIREDA had already provided solar lighting systems to 73 police stations across the state.
  3. In the thermal applications part, MANIREDA would be taking up programme covering 50,000 solar water heaters for domestic as well commercial use .
  4. MANIREDA has so far powered 200 villages through renewable energy sources, located in some of the remotest parts of the state, with solar energy. These villages had not been electrified due to their their remoteness.
  5. The agency honoured 110 meritorious students by them with a domestic solar energy lighting system each. These students had excelled in the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur, examinations this year and last year.
