Global RE sector witnessed M & A activity worth USD 33.4 billion in 2010 with the Asia-Pacific region (including India) contributing 12 per cent of the total value, according to recent report by PwC. 2010 saw 530 deals as against 319 in 2009, though the value dropped against the USD 48.8 billion in 2009.

Asia contributed USD 3.56 billion, led by Chinese deals alone worth USD 2.13 billion. India stood third in deal value in the RE sector with deals worth USD 388 million, after China (USD 2.13 billion) and Australia (USD 684 million). Other nations covered in the region are Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam.

PwC India Leader (Energy, Utilities, and Mining) Kameswara Rao said, “In the Indian context, policymakers and regulators need to appreciate that their support to renewable energy through procurement obligations and feed-in tariffs is not necessarily an expensive source of power for state utilities. Rather, renewable energy can provide protection against fuel inflation and enhance security of supply over the longer term.”
