GreenX CERs for Phase Three of the EU ETS

Posted on June 9, 2011 by

On Wednesday, Carbon bourse GreenX launched a secondary CER contract that can be delivered in 2011 and 2012 and will be compliant for use with phase three of the EU emission trading scheme (ETS).

These “green” certified emissions reductions certificated will be offered by the exchange for the period of 2011 and 2012, meaning that these certificates can be used by participants in the 2013-2020 phase of the EU carbon market.

To be compliant with the EU ETS, these certificates will be sourced for projects excluding HFC 23, adipic acid N2O, nuclear projects, land use, land use change and forestry activities (LULUCF). The EU had formally banned the use of credits sourced from HFC 23 and N2O projects from 2013 and future CERs will most likely be allowed only from least developed countries. Hence, for eligibility, the GreenX CERs too will be based on the EU standards.
