Carbon Credits projects under the Waste Heat Recovery

Posted on April 12, 2011 by

Waste heat is the heat that is generated along with fuel combustion and remain unutilized even though it could still be reused for some useful and economic purpose. Simply put, it is thermal energy which is most likely to go ‘waste’. The essential quality of heat depends on the ability to extract value out of it rather than the absolute amount/quantity. Recovery of this heat depends on temperature of the waste heat gases(also called ‘flue’ gases). Large quantity of hot flue gases is generated from Boilers, Kilns, Ovens and Furnaces. If some of this waste heat could be recovered, a considerable amount of primary fuel could be saved.

Benefits of ‘waste heat recovery’:

Direct Benefit Indirect Benefit
Efficiency of the process – reduction in the utility consumption (Fuel consumption)  & costs Reduction in pollution, Reduction in auxiliary energy consumption

Carbon Credits and Waste heat recovery

Any project activity that leads to GHG emission reduction can create carbon credits. One carbon credit is equivalent to one ton of carbon dioxide. Only quantifiable, certifiable GHG emission reductions can be turned into carbon credits (subject to the demonstration of baseline and additionality).

Waste heat recovery systems anyways save additional fuel consumption in the organizations/industry. Therefore these projects prevent GHG emission due to burning of fossil fuels and further eligible to earn carbon credits under the CDM/VCS.

Registered CDM projects under the Waste heat recovery category: At the end of Jan 2011, there are 178 projects registered worldwide under the WHR scope of CDM framework. These projects have earned more than 1500 Cr INR from issued carbon credits. In India, there are 68 projects registered under the WHR scope. Indian projects have earned about 9 Cr INR from issued carbon credits.
