GRI G3.1 launched

Sustainability reporting recently got the most complete guidance ever in the form of GRI’s G3.1 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines, launched on 23 March 2011. GRI has also launched guidance that will help companies in determining what to measure and report. The Technical Protocol will guide organizations in producing relevant reports more easily. The G3.1 Guidelines include updated guidance on critical issues – human rights, gender and community.

Organizations that are already reporting their sustainability measures, initiatives and performance can use the current G3 Guidelines or the G3.1 Guidelines. These versions will remain valid till the launch of next generation of GRI Guidelines. The launch of next generation is expected in 2013. The next generation will become the only valid version of the Guidelines in 2015.

Reporting based on G3 guidelines remains valid, but GRI recommends that organizations use G3.1, since those are the most comprehensive reporting guidance available. The new version enables organizations to be transparent on a wider range of sustainability issues.
