Wind Energy – Global statistics

China is now the world leader in wind power. It overtook USA as the world leader as late as 2010. The chart below shows the growth of installed wind power across the 5 leading countries in wind energy installations. One thing that just can’t be missed noticing is the exponential rate of growth in China. China has an installed wind energy base of just 300MW in 2000. It ended the year 2010 with a stunning 42,300 MW! Also worth noting is the rate at which it overtook the historical leaders – Spain, Germany and US.

China overtook in 2008 sometime and in one year of 2010, it installed nearly double the total installed capacity of India. This is definitely something India needs to learn from China – we continue to grow at a steady and sometimes too slow a pace.
