India on Rank 3 in GHG emissions – though distant!

Posted on October 6, 2010 by

India has recently overtaken Russia as the third-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. But the rank three comes with huge disparities – China is number one contributing 23 percent, the United States is second at about 22 percent and India is number three at about five percent. Indian per-capita emissions are still low but demand for energy is rising given the boom in the spendings of the middle-class buys across cars, TV’s and better housing. Much of the energy required for creating these comes from coal, oil and gas, souces of GHG – carbon dioxide.

Indian Minister of Environment and Forests, Mr. Jairam Ramesh recently commented “We will unilaterally, voluntarily, move on a low-carbon growth path. We can’t have 8 percent to 9 percent G.D.P. growth and high-carbon growth. It has to be low-carbon 8 percent, 9 percent growth and that is the objective that we have set for ourselves.”

Developing nations are now the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. The big developing countries such India and China have initiated steps to control the rate of growth of their emissions but getting them to agree on absolute cuts does not look possible in near future. There is a fear this absolute targets will hurt their economies.

India has been active unilaterally in tackling through it’s National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC). It has announced a this climate plan, which identifies renewable energy, such as solar power, as a key elements. Coal still is the backbone of energy supply and around 50% of the population has no access to quality electricity supply.
